Visually, Loopmancer looks excellent and serves as a wonderful showcase for the graphical prowess of Unreal Engine 4 even in 2022. RELATED: Alan Wake 2's Story is a 'Monster' Says Dev It’s a pulp fiction mystery worth following from beginning to end. The branching storylines at the narrative’s center aren’t as complex and interweaving as they could have been however, it still offers enough incentive for players to go back and experience the multiple endings as the story goes to new places depending on the player’s choice. Every layer that Zixu peels back only raises more questions for the audience and takes a few unexpected twists. Although very B-movie in its execution and character development, Loopmancer still manages to hit the right story beats to keep players interested in what's coming next. This is just a demo, so I’ll reserve judgment until the full game comes out later this year, but emphasis on story and cutscenes may end up being to Loopmancer’s detriment.Loopmancer’s cyberpunk noir atmosphere is thick and engaging, being more than a simple framing device for the game’s loop-based mechanics. The opening cutscene in particular gives a sour impression for the actual quality of the game, and I almost didn’t even give Loopmancer a chance because of it. Most of them are on par with something you’d see in a low-budget PS3 game, not just visually, but with regards to the writing and performances too. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the cutscenes, which are laughably bad. Exploring the semi-random levels on each re-birth never got old because the game is a treat to look at. The neon-soaked world has plenty of cyberpunk charm, and the high-contrast lighting and semi-dynamic camera give fights a highly cinematic feeling. I’m not critical of the difficulty - though as I’ve gotten older I’ve found less time and appreciation for games I have to break myself over - but I do have to draw attention to some of Loopmancer’s less-polished presentation.
